The Coral del Mar case study illustrates the importance of a good WMS for multi-warehouse management. Coral del Mar is a multi-sector logistics operator with operations strategically located throughout Uruguay.
Founded as a transportation company in 1985, it now offers services covering the entire logistics chain, including warehousing, inventory management, transportation, and distribution, among others. The company is a member of ITSANET, a network of logistics operators in Latin America.
The Challenge
With its business expanding steadily and two warehouses in operation, Coral del Mar decided to computerize its operations in order to improve efficiency and control.
In addition to the challenges inherent in multi-warehouse operations, CDM’s operations presented additional complexities: they handled both palletized and non-palletized shipments, as well as logistics units of varying weights and sizes. Furthermore, the new business areas CDM was entering required it to provide its customers with online information on inventory status.
The WMS system to be implemented should overcome these management complexities and enable efficient, simultaneous control of both facilities. With this goal in mind, Coral Del Mar staff began evaluating the options available on the market.
The Solution
After reviewing the software options available in Uruguay, GT WMS (or, as they call it, “Tip Top”) from GlobalTech was the chosen solution. Key factors in this decision included its high level of configurability, operational flexibility, and scalability. All these factors would enable the company to implement new operational processes as new businesses are added. The web interface—a tool for sharing real-time inventory status information with customers—was also considered a valuable feature.
The GT WMS implementation project began with an operational assessment of the tasks performed at both locations. The various processes were reviewed, and their strengths and potential areas for optimization were analyzed. Following this, the decision was made to proceed with the installation of the software on Coral Del Mar’s corporate servers, followed by intensive training.
During the training, at each of the operational sites, key users were taught how to configure the tool, and operational aspects were covered for the various user levels, including supervisors and operators.
In addition, a series of pre-production tests were conducted to allow CDM staff to become familiar with the tool and reinforce the knowledge they acquired during the training period.
Once these stages were completed, the commissioning took place simultaneously at both sites and was a complete success.
